Research has shown that people in most of the developing world, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa are now living longer than they did two decades ago. However, the extra years beyond the estimated life expectancy of 63 years are lived in poor health in the region. Consequently, the healthy life expectancy is reduced to an estimated 55 years in Sub- Saharan Africa. Several factors are responsible for the reduction in life expectancy of people in this region: poor health conditions due to lack of access to modern healthcare delivery to deal with diseases and infections; malnutrition arising from hunger and starvation; poor access to clean drinking water; poor sheltering and unhealthy environment among others.
